Is it horizontal? Level? Our predecessors build a loverly terrace outside the french windows, room for two for breakfast (four at push) in the morning sun. And it's 100% perfectly level.

Which means when it rains the water runs equally off all sides, and we get equal amounts of black lines and stains down the rendering. Oh how we wish he'd made it ever so slightly "downhill" so all the rain runs off one corner.

Can't blame him, he's good at concrete and tiles and stuff and did a perfect job, it wouldnt' have occurred to us until hindsight to aim for anything less than level! :-)

We are fascinated with what appears to be the general attitude to water run-off, even inside the house! We had a big rain storm not long after we first lived in Provence, water started to drip down a couple of internal walls. We were told, don't worry, it will be gone tomorrow. It was!!

We get ONE or maybe two storms a year where the exact angle and force of rain and wind somehow gets water up into the tiles. From where it drips down onto the ceiling lagging, runs down to the corner, and drips down the wall.

Last year it happened whilst we were there, we got a roofer up. He changed out about a dozen smashed tiles. Not seen a drip since - thoughy "yay" - then this year, with tennants in residence, we had That Sort Of Storm... It may be it just can't be 100% cured.

I remember that lovely terrace in St. Rhemy, and appreciated the cool evenings up there while hoping to get a glimpse of Elle doing the daredevil strut on the rooftop.

How I would have appreciated it even more had I known how much effort went into the completion of it!

I love how your comments are set up so that I can reply back by following the link from my email!

We will be off shortly to Sicily...I just figured that it would be best to get Le Marche off of my post drafts as I am sure there will be loads to tell about Sicily. At least while there, I doubt that there'd be any opportunity for me to get the urge to stir up trouble in a bat cave. Only how much I was able to eat! ;-)
